Headaches / Migraines

Headaches

Commonly used to describe pain in the upper neck or over the head. Headaches can vary in intensity, location and duration. There are often different type of headaches : tension, cluster headaches, sinus headache and cervicogenic headache. It is very common for us to see headaches arising from the neck.

Migraines

Often more severe than a headaches sometimes characterised by a pulsating pain one side of the head. Migraines can cause nausea, sensitivity to light and sound and even nausea. Migraines can last for several hours or even days.

What are the common causes of Headache and Migraine?

The cause of headaches can be attributed to a wide range of common lifestyle factors:

  • Computer work
  • Dietary Factors
  • Hormonal Changes
  • Medications
  • Jaw Dysfunction
  • Stress
  • Forward Head Posture
  • Arthritis in neck
  • Muscle Tension
  • Dehydration

How can Chiropractic Care help?

Effective treatment for headaches and migraines depends on an accurate diagnosis and addressing the underlying cause. Just because the pain is in the head it doesn’t mean the root of the problem remains here. It is common for our chiropractors to find that the spine has a lot to answer for when it comes to headaches and migraines.

At our clinic we pride ourself on our initial examination. On your initial consultation we will figure out a working diagnosis and the cause of your headaches or migraines.

  • Verbal Consultation

Sciatica

Slipped Disc

Headaches / Migraines

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica can be a pain, weakness or a tingling sensation which mirrors the path of the nerve and is characterised by pain that runs from the lower back, into the back of the buttock, down the leg, calf and even into the ankle and foot.

What are the common causes of sciatica?

There are multiple places in the spine for the nerve to be pinched, each giving a slightly different pattern of pain and dysfunction.

  • Herniated "slipped" disc
  • Spinal Stenosis (degeneration)
  • Muscle Spasm
  • Arthritis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Tumor
  • Postural Alignment

How can Chiropractic Care help?

Each case of sciatica has its own set of triggers. You may find your symptoms worse when doing certain things like lifting, sitting, coughing or sneezing. Our professionals will take the time to identify the underlying cause by taking a thorough medical history and complete physical examination including the following.

  • Verbal Consultation
  • X-Ray (if required)
  • Orthopaedic examination
  • Neurological examination
  • Functional Movement Screen
  • Spinal Assessment
  • Digital Posture Screen

From here we will use the following services to create you a custom care plan to resolve your back pain. Our initial focus when treating sciatica is pain relief. One of the most effective tools is address any underlying spinal alignment issues that are causing the exiting spinal nerves to be trapped or impinged. By removing the pressure on the nerve, we often alleviate pain directly, sometimes the pain undergoes characteristic changes on the road to recovery, this is known as centralisation with pain reducing in the lower part of the leg before it does in the upper leg and back.

Slipped Disc

Slipped Disc

What is Slipped Disc?

The human spine is made up of a series of bones called vertebrae and between these vertebrae there are cushion-like discs.

  1. A herniated disc occurs when the inner core of the disc pushes through a tear our weakened area in the outer layer. This can lead to the inner core or herniation causing impingement to the nerves or spinal canal
  2. A bulging disc is when the discs outer layer extends beyond its normal boundaries but does not rupture. This bulge may still press nerves nearby.

What are the common causes of Slipped Disc?

There are multiple places in the spine for the nerve to be pinched, each giving a slightly different pattern of pain and dysfunction.

  • Postural Alignment
  • Trauma (sports injury)
  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Degenerative Damage
  • Weight lifting
  • Prolonged Sitting
  • Overweight

Poor Posture

Slipped Disc

Slipped Disc

What does your Posture tell about your Spine?

Your posture gives a window to your spinal alignment and gives an indication as to what position your spine is in. A healthy posture typically means a healthy spine.

There are a number of markers that can be assessed to understand if an underlying spinal problem is present.

Our spine has evolved to support and protect our nervous system against gravity. This means that the alignment of the spine should allow even distribution of body weight through all 24 separate spinal bones.

The most common postural change we now see is the head coming forward relative to the shoulders, with the shoulders then rounding and causing the appearance of a slouched look or hump at the base of the neck. Based on physics, for every inch the ear moves forward over the shoulder position the effective weight of the head doubles. The muscles have to work harder to support the weight of the head and this in turn increases the loading through certain spinal segments in the neck, typically the C5 vertabrae.

Symptoms people may have other than postural change include:

  • Stiff, achy or painful neck
  • Reduced movement side to side
  • Headaches / migraines
  • Sensation changes or pain in the arms
  • Tinnitus, dizziness or sinus issus

Effective treatment for poor posture depends on figuring out the exact diagnosis and cause of the problem. At our clinic our chiropractor will figure out the root cause of you pain using the following:
